Versatile Jackets from Poncho Outdoors
At Poncho Outdoors, our editorial team has put a range of shirts to the test, focusing on their practicality across various situations. Each shirt is designed not only for functionality but also for style, making them suitable for everything from adventurous road trips to office meetings.
We had three team members try out these products: AJ Kinney, who lives in the Cayman Islands but hails from Minnesota, often spends his free time out on fishing boats. Nickolaus Hines, based in Denver, has lively debates with bartenders about the perfect vermouth ratio, while Tim Wenger, who resides in western Colorado, can easily justify mountain climbing at noon as just “work.”
The Red Bud
The Red Bud shirt is the perfect choice for days when you want to showcase a bit of style without going overboard. Over the past six months, this shirt has accompanied me on flights, long road trips, and even more formal dinners.
With a lightweight jacket-like texture that's not too stiff, its fabric has just the right weight and stretch, making it comfortable enough to wear for hours on end. Although it features some Western details and pearl snaps, I was told it looked a bit “too Western” when I wore it to a Delta event at Denver airport. I opted for the light brown color, which works well against dusty red backgrounds, but there are plenty of neutral options if you prefer something less flashy.
The Ventura
Whenever I need an extra layer but don't want to lug around a heavy jacket, I always pack my Ventura denim shirt. The sage brush color fits perfectly in both mountain and beach towns, which are two places I frequently visit.

This shirt has been my go-to for long days when I don’t have time to rest but still want to look sharp. It's thicker than a regular long-sleeve shirt but lighter than a jacket, making it ideal for the unpredictable weather ranging from 10 to 20 degrees Celsius. I wore this shirt throughout a winter trip to San Diego, where I balanced beach days with city outings.
The Grey Fox
I ordered the Grey Fox shirt before attending a work seminar in Detroit. It’s stylish and features sun protection (SPF 50), which is perfect for biking along the Detroit riverfront. I’m not a fan of plastic materials, but this shirt is made from rPET, which is recycled plastic from bottles, making me feel more comfortable wearing it.
The Clinch Knot
Like many non-professional fishermen, I love shirts with collars that provide ample storage for sunglasses and other small items. This shirt features a clean, easy-to-read plaid design. The magnetic snap on the chest pocket is a nice touch, making it a perfect choice for travel days.
The Undertow
This shirt is incredibly lightweight and quick-drying, ideal for warm weather while still offering sun protection. I absolutely love the Slate Blue color and the comfort it provides throughout a long day. The fabric’s wrinkle-resistant quality keeps it looking fresh even after being worn all day.
The Bandera
The Bandera shirt showcases a Western style with pearl snaps, which is right up my alley. I’m also impressed by the hidden zippered pocket, perfect for quickly grabbing cash or boarding passes.
The products from Poncho Outdoors not only help me look good but are also incredibly convenient in any situation. I truly feel more confident wearing these shirts in any scenario—from fishing trips to work events.
