American Airlines is making basic economy fares more challenging for travelers, particularly for elite members, with a series of unfavorable changes.
The State of Basic Economy Fares at American Airlines
In the past two weeks, most airlines in the U.S. have raised checked baggage fees to boost revenue amid rising fuel prices. American Airlines has joined this trend but is taking the degradation of basic economy fares to a new level.
Value Stripped Away for Elite Travelers
It's safe to say that nearly all airlines in the U.S. now offer basic economy tickets to compete with low-cost carriers. The primary goal isn't just to provide consumers with cheaper flying options, but also to push current customers to spend more to avoid basic economy fares. In fact, basic economy tickets are designed to be punitive, as airlines want as many passengers as possible to steer clear of these fares.
New Changes at American Airlines
American Airlines recently announced a series of changes to its basic economy fares:
✈️ Tìm chuyến bay giá tốt
Đặt vé ngay với giá ưu đãi từ các hãng hàng không
- For tickets purchased starting April 9, 2026, the checked baggage fee will increase by $5 for the first and second bags compared to standard economy fares; this means the first bag will cost between $50-55 and the second bag will be $60-65.
- Starting May 18, 2026, basic economy tickets will no longer qualify for complimentary upgrades for elite members or systemwide upgrades; cash or mileage upgrades will still be available but at flexible pricing.
- Also from May 18, 2026, basic economy fares will not include free seat assignments, meaning even elite travelers will have to pay if they wish to select their seats.
These are just the latest negative changes to American Airlines' basic economy fares. At the end of 2025, the airline had already implemented changes that made these tickets ineligible for accumulating AAdvantage miles or Loyalty Points.
Analysis of Policy Changes
The intent behind this policy is clear. While some may disagree with this decision, American Airlines is clearly trying to encourage elite members to spend more and avoid basic economy fares. This is further evidenced by basic economy tickets no longer counting toward elite status qualifications.
How Non-Elite Customers Are Affected
For non-elite travelers, the biggest change is that they will have to pay an additional $5 for a checked bag unless they have benefits from a credit card or membership status. However, the larger issue is that elite passengers are now left without any perks when it comes to basic economy tickets.
Conclusion: Big Changes Ahead for Basic Economy Tickets at American
American Airlines is implementing significant changes to its basic economy fares. From now on, we can expect checked baggage fees on basic economy tickets to be $5 higher than those on non-basic economy tickets. But the news gets worse: starting May 18, 2026, basic economy fares will no longer include free upgrades or seat assignments, which will undoubtedly have a negative impact on elite customers.
