Air India Takes a Bold Step Forward

Air India is on a mission to revamp its image and enhance the travel experience for its passengers. Recently, they’ve introduced modern wide-body aircraft, upgraded interiors on existing flights, and even opened a new lounge at Delhi Airport. Now, some exciting news has arrived in San Francisco: Air India has launched its first lounge at San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and it looks quite impressive!

Essential Information About the Air India Lounge

As of the end of March 2026, Air India has opened its new lounge at SFO, covering an area of 3,413 square feet. This lounge is located in the lounge area at Gate A on the fourth floor, nestled between the China Airlines lounge and the Golden Gate Lounge. It operates daily from 6 AM to 11:59 PM, making it accessible not only for Air India flights.

Details of the Air India Lounge

The main contractor for this lounge is Build Group, which has released a website featuring renderings of the lounge space. Initial images of the lounge have also been shared on FlyerTalk. The lounge exudes luxury and promises to be a delightful retreat for travelers.

However, with just over 3,400 square feet of space, this lounge is among the smaller ones in the airport, and I anticipate it will be quite busy, especially before Air India flights. Fortunately, Air India has a well-organized flight schedule, so there aren’t usually multiple Air India flights departing simultaneously.

Air India’s Growing Presence at SFO

Since starting operations at SFO nearly a decade ago, Air India’s presence has significantly expanded. The airline now offers up to 14 weekly flights to the Bay Area, making the opening of a lounge a logical move. This is Air India’s second lounge in the U.S., with the first located in New York (JFK), which is currently undergoing major renovations.

Why Did Air India Open a Lounge at SFO?

You might wonder why Air India chose to build its own lounge when there is already a United Polaris lounge at SFO. It’s important to note that the United Polaris lounge is located at Gate G, while Air India operates from Gate A. Although the two terminals are connected in the passenger area, the walking distance between them is quite far, making it impractical for most passengers flying with Air India to use the United lounge.

Previously, Air India’s premium passengers were directed to the Golden Gate Lounge (formerly the Air France lounge), but given the number of flights the airline operates from SFO, having its own lounge makes perfect sense. I wouldn’t be surprised if the lounge opens its doors to outside guests during non-peak hours, potentially participating in programs like Priority Pass, similar to the lounge at JFK (although the SFO lounge is not currently part of Priority Pass).

The Potential of the Air India Lounge at SFO

Thanks to the lounge access rules of Star Alliance, many premium passengers can also access this lounge, including Gold members from other airlines. This will undoubtedly enhance the experience for travelers flying with Air India.

Looking Forward to the New Lounge

Air India is planning to open another lounge at SFO in the near future. This lounge, approximately 3,400 square feet in size, will be located at Gate A. We already have a rendering of the lounge, giving us a glimpse of the new design Air India is aiming for. I’m eager to learn more about the services offered here, especially the amenities the lounge will provide.

It’s truly exciting to see Air India working to improve the passenger experience. The new lounge at SFO promises to be a perfect stopover for anyone traveling with the airline. If you get the chance to visit, be sure to share your thoughts with me!
