Air Canada has expanded its innovative lounge concept with a new Café model, offering high-quality grab-and-go food and drinks. New locations in Montreal and Vancouver promise added convenience for travelers.

Air Canada Expands Its Café Concept

Air Canada is broadening one of the smartest lounge ideas in recent years: a 'Café' designed for customers on the go. The airline has just launched new Café locations in Montreal (YUL) and Vancouver (YVR), building on the concept first introduced at Toronto Pearson (YYZ). This idea has already gained popularity at Toronto Billy Bishop Airport (YTZ), Montreal (domestic terminal), and Vancouver (domestic terminal).

The new Montreal Café is located in the U.S. departure area, while the Vancouver Café is situated in the domestic departure area, marking it as the second Café in Concourse C.

A Lounge Designed for Efficient Connections

Traditional lounges often operate under the assumption that you have time to sit and wait. However, with tight connections and expansive airport terminals, many travelers find themselves without the luxury of time to linger in a lounge before or between flights. What they need is something quick, high-quality, and easy to take away... exactly what Air Canada Café offers.

Rather than the large buffet spreads and cozy seating, these lounges focus on premium food and drinks to go, along with a limited number of seats for those who prefer to stay. Here, you can find expertly brewed coffee, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and local pastries... a simple yet brilliant idea.

New Locations in Montreal and Vancouver

Air Canada is doubling down on this concept at its two major hubs. In Vancouver, the airline has opened its second Café in the domestic terminal near gates 50-51, featuring an 84-seat space, a full-service bar, barista coffee, and local dishes like delicious bao and fresh kimbap. The menu uses seasonal ingredients sourced locally, reflecting Vancouver's diverse culinary scene.

Customers can enjoy favorites like steaming char siu bao, vegan curry bao, fresh vegan kimbap, and sweet treats from the famous Granville Island bakery, Lee’s Donuts. Meanwhile, Montreal has welcomed another Café in the U.S. departure area, with 62 seats that highlight the city's coffee culture and local specialties such as smoked meat sandwiches, bagels, and pastries. The menu includes classic Montreal dishes like smoked meat sandwiches, fresh bagels, and sweet treats like hazelnut croissants and vegetarian soup crafted by Quebec's Sagamité Watso.

Why This Is My Favorite Lounge Concept

I truly believe this is the lounge concept of the future, one we will see more of in the U.S. shortly. It all started with the Lufthansa Senator Café in Munich (MUC), but it has now spread across the U.S. with United Club Fly lounges in Denver (DEN) and Houston (IAH), as well as American Airlines' Concept Provisions by Admirals Club in Charlotte (CLT), and the new grab-and-go area at Delta Sky Club in Atlanta (ATL).

Good coffee is my number one amenity in any lounge, and I wholeheartedly welcome Air Canada's focus on quality coffee... just look at the long lines at most Starbucks locations serving subpar coffee to realize that when lounges serve high-quality coffee drinks, they are meeting a significant demand.

Moreover, the airline's current business model in the U.S. relies on loyalty programs, and to be profitable, they need many customers to sign up for premium cards. Unfortunately, lounges haven’t scaled quickly enough to accommodate the number of guests, which explains the long wait times at Delta Sky Clubs. These grab-and-go lounges provide a 'spillover' option for traditional lounges.

Conclusion

Air Canada's Café concept is expanding, with new locations in Montreal and Vancouver. It’s a straightforward idea executed very well: premium food and drinks combined with quick service, perfectly suited for short connections and cleverly addressing the overcrowding issue at lounges. If there’s one lounge idea I wish more airlines would replicate, it’s this one.
