Smart Ways to Use Capital One Travel Credit

When it comes to travel benefits from credit cards, one of my favorite perks is the Capital One travel credit. In case you didn’t know, this is a $300 credit offered annually on the Capital One Venture X Rewards and Capital One Venture X Business cards. Both of these cards come with a $395 annual fee, and this credit nearly offsets that cost.

A similar benefit is available through a limited-time welcome offer on the mid-tier Capital One Venture Rewards card. With the Venture Rewards card, you can earn 75,000 bonus miles after spending $4,000 in the first three months of account opening. Plus, upon approval, you’ll receive a $250 travel credit to use in your first year.

However, this offer ends on April 13, so if you want to take advantage of the $250 travel credit with an annual fee of just $95, be sure to apply soon!

Split Credit for Multiple Car Rentals

Travel content director Eric Rosen has successfully split his Capital One travel credit between two car rentals, one for $120 and another for $180. Eric loves using this credit for car rentals because the Venture X card provides primary rental car insurance. Notably, the Capital One travel credit can be divided among different bookings, so Eric might have used part of his credit for a flight or hotel booked through this portal (if he hadn’t already exhausted it on car rentals).

Editor Matt Moffitt frequently uses his credit to offset costs for week-long car rentals when visiting friends in Austin. He mentions that when searching through the Capital One travel portal, he almost always books with Hertz due to the benefits of his Venture X President's Circle status.

Book Flights with Price Protection

Head points and miles writer Katie Genter always utilizes her Capital One travel credit for flights—especially those where she wants to take advantage of Capital One’s price protection feature. With price protection, when you book a flight recommended by Capital One's price prediction tool, they monitor the price for 10 days. If the price drops during this period, you’ll receive the difference as travel credit, up to $50.

Recently, Katie booked two one-way flights on Azerbaijan Airlines from Heydar Aliyev International Airport (GYD) in Baku, Azerbaijan, to Istanbul Airport (IST) for a total of $279. She earned nearly 1,400 Capital One miles for this booking since the Venture X card earns 5 miles per dollar spent on flights booked through Capital One.

Easy Airport Hotel Bookings

Travel writer Rachel Craft used part of her Capital One travel credit for a night at the Hilton Chicago O'Hare Airport during an overnight layover. While the Hilton at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago might be pricier than options further away, it’s clearly the most convenient choice. The hotel cost $258 for one night, but Rachel mentioned she wasn’t too concerned about the price since it was practically free—thanks to her Capital One travel credit.

Offset Costs for Expensive Getaways

I also utilized my Capital One travel credit to save on a hotel stay. I booked a three-night getaway at the Conrad Las Vegas at Resorts World in January 2025. I was heading to Las Vegas for an expensive concert, so saving on the rest of the trip was ideal. Fortunately, the $300 travel credit reduced the cost of my three-night stay to just $314. I earned 3,140 Capital One miles for this booking since it was made through the portal.

Save for Big Vacations (Like Weddings)

Eric shared that he also used his Capital One travel credit for a wedding weekend getaway at the Del Mar Beach Hotel in San Diego. If Eric had to pay the entire amount out of pocket, it would have cost $1,200, but thanks to his credit, the total came down to $900. Plus, since he earned 10 miles per dollar spent on this booking with his Venture X card, he received 9,000 Capital One miles. (Note: You don’t earn miles on the portion covered by travel credit).

Conclusion

The Capital One travel credit is one of the best travel credits out there, especially since you don’t have to spend a minimum amount to receive it, and you don’t have to use it all at once. If you appreciate simplicity and (relative) flexibility, there are plenty of ways to optimize this credit. The $300 travel credit is an ongoing benefit of the Venture X and Venture X Business cards. The mid-tier Venture Rewards card is also offering a $250 credit through a limited-time promotion, but this offer expires on April 13. Keep an eye on that date if you’re interested!
